As a sports traumatologist, I’d like to address a crucial topic for all who engage in sport: heat stroke. This serious issue can endanger athletes’ lives if not acted upon quickly. Here are practical tips to manage such a situation:
Recognise the symptoms: Early signs include dizziness, headache, confusion, hot, dry skin, and lack of sweating despite the heat. If someone shows these symptoms, act immediately.
Stop the activity: Cease all physical exertion at once. Continuing could worsen the situation.
Seek shade and cool the body: Move the person to a shaded and cool area. Use cooling methods like damp cloths on the skin or fans to reduce body temperature.
Hydration: If conscious, the person should sip water or isotonic drinks. Avoid caffeine or alcohol, which worsen dehydration.
Avoid drinks containing caffeine or alcohol, as they can worsen dehydration.
Consult a medical professional: If symptoms persist or consciousness is lost, seek immediate medical attention.
Heat stroke can progress rapidly and cause severe damage to the body.
Prevention is always better than cure. Ensure you:
Stay well hydrated before, during, and after exercise
Train during cooler hours
Wear appropriate, light-coloured, breathable clothing
Taking care of your health is essential to enjoy sport. Let’s not underestimate the risks of heat!
